Lake Michigan College Offers Summer Arts Camps

Did you know there’s a place where you can create your own unique musical instrument this summer? It’s the same place where you can choose your own adventure among the visual and performing arts, and learn skills for the musical theatre. It’s all on the docket and more thanks to the Lake Michigan College Visual & Performing Arts Department’s series of summer arts workshops.

LMC is now accepting registration for their summer arts workshops, as they tee up a variety of arts education opportunities this summer for students as young as 8-years-old to adults at the Mendel Center on the Benton Harbor campus.

LMC will hold its Musical Theatre Intensive, in partnership with Children’s Musical Workshop, from July 27th to 31st, a new Visual & Performing Arts Camp, August 3rd to 7th, and, in conjunction with LMC’s Fab Lab, a Make Your Own Instrument Camp, August 3rd to 6th, as well as a Ukulele Camp from August 10th to the 12th.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic LMC’s Summer Choir program and its TeenStock production in partnership with CMW has been canceled this year, but look for those opportunities to return in 2021.

The following summer workshops are currently accepting registration:

MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE

Formerly CMW University, this program is a week-long triple threat intensive to develop skills and show off talents in singing, acting and dancing. Students interested in this program will complete a pre-assessment of their skill levels via video submission or in person at 6 pm on July 13th in the Mendel Center F125. The program runs 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Monday, July 27th through Friday, July 31st with a final public performance showcase at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 31st in the Hanson Theatre. This program is a partnership between Children’s Music Workshop and LMC Visual & Performing Arts. Ages: Grade 7-age 20. Cost: $200, scholarships are available through CMW.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS CAMP

New this year is the Visual & Performing Arts Camp. This program, scheduled for 8:30 am-4:30 pm August 3rd to 7th, is designed with a “choose your own adventure” focus with offerings in instrumental music, vocal music, dance, drama, art, and creative writing. Part of each day will be spent in the LMC Fab Lab making non-traditional musical instruments to debut, along with other products of participants’ creativity, at a public exhibition 7:30 pm on Friday, August 7th in the newly renovated Hanson Theatre. No audition or portfolio required. Ages: 13-18. Cost: $200, scholarships are available.

MAKE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT CAMP

The Visual & Performing Arts Department and LMC’s Fab Lab Lab offers this program where participants can use their imagination and skills to create their own unique instrument. This camp runs 9 am-none Monday, August 3rd through Thursday, August 6th. Ages: 8 and older. Cost: $139.

UKULELE CAMP

Back by popular demand, in partnership with LMC’s Fab Lab, the Ukulele Camp gives participants a chance to design, build, decorate, string, and play their own ukulele. This camp runs 9 am to noon Monday, August 10th through Wednesday, August 12th. Ages: 8 and older. Cost: $109.
