It’s a good thing that the governor extended expiration dates on our driver’s licenses, state ID cards and license plate tabs last week, because the roughly 900 Secretary of State employees currently on furlough will be out of work for at least another week.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reports that the temporary lay-off of approximately 900 Michigan Department of State employees is being extended for another week, with the possibility of future extension as well. The majority of staff laid off are those who typically work in branch offices, which remain closed during the pandemic.
Benson says, “This was an extremely difficult decision to make,” and adds, “But balancing the needs of the families impacted by these layoffs against the fiscal realities our state and department are now facing is not a responsibility I take lightly. We will continue working on a plan to reopen branches and get our employees back to work as soon as we are safely able.”
The Michigan Department Of State services available to the public remain unchanged, inasmuch as you can conduct the majority of your business with them online. A list of online services and self-service stations located across the state can be found at this link: http://Michigan.gov/SOS
