After a weekend of tremendous discourse on social media stemming from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extension and expansion late last week of her Stay Home, Stay Safe executive order, many were eager to hear what she would have to say in her update today. Chief among those waiting to hear what’s ahead was the Small Business Association of Michigan.
They were happy that she addressed the eventual re-opening of the Michigan economy. Here is what the association’s President Brian Calley had to say:
“Today the Governor acknowledged that our state faces both a health care and an economic crisis, each requiring a robust response. This was a welcome signal to small business owners on the verge of or beyond collapse.
“The Governor’s comments indicated that she is working (as in present tense) to develop a plan to safely reopen the economy, and she asked business owners to start thinking toward the extra measures they would need to take to keep their employees and customers safe. While this is no surprise to many of us engaged in that process, it was very important, helpful, and reassuring to hear it directly from her.
“The Governor mentioned 4 primary measures that will guide the decisions regarding how, when and where to reopen:
- Infection rates
- Ability to test and trace the virus
- Health Care System Capacity
- Development of Best Practices in the workplace
“This helps small businesses to track relevant progress and even participate in preparations. We look forward to addressing the urgent needs of the people of this state, together.”
The Small Business Association of Michigan focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan’s small business community through advocacy, collaboration and buying power. Today they serve over 27,000 members in all 83 counties of Michigan. SBAM is located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol.
