Dollar General Returns to St. Joe After Four Year Absence

Dollar General has returned to the St. Joseph market for the first time in more than four years and will celebrate the occasion with a Grand Opening event this coming Saturday, September 7th at their new site at Hilltop & Cleveland in St. Joseph Township, in the former Family Video location.

The major discount retailer was in St. Joseph for a number of years at 810 Napier Avenue until departing in the spring of 2015 citing increased lease rates at that location, and they haven’t been back until now. Their old space on Napier across from the Howard Ice Arena became the home of Accomplish Quilting in 2016 when they moved from Stevensville.

Dollar General’s newest store at 2108 S. Cleveland Ave. in Saint Joseph opened a couple of weeks ago, and the company says that in its new location, they “will offer area residents a convenient new place to shop for everyday essentials at low prices.”

Dollar General will celebrate the store’s official grand opening this Saturday, September 7th at 8 am, with free prizes and special deals. Additionally, the company says that the first 50 adult shoppers at the store will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways.

Dan Nieser is Dollar General’s Senior Vice President of Real Estate & Store Development. He says, “Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” and adds, “We hope our area customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

Dollar General stores all across the nation offer a focused selection of national name brands and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health/beauty products. Company officials say that the store’s fresh layout is designed to make shopping simple for customers, with seasonal products displayed in the center of the store. Other departments are easily recognizable with visible signage, and coolers are conveniently located at the front of the store as well.

Traditional Dollar General stores employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the need.  Anyone interested in joining the Dollar General team is invited to visit the Career section at www.dollargeneral.com.

Corporate officials say, “Dollar General gives its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise, and is deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education.” At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or prepare for their high school equivalency test can pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $168 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 10 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
