The last thing tourism folks in South Haven want is for you to be frustrated by the challenge of parking and traffic congestion, so they have conjured up a plan and will introduce what they are calling the Downtown Parking Loop, complete shuttle service to key points of interest in the lakeside community.
The brainchild of a partnership between the South Haven/Van Buren County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Van Buren Public Transit, the first ever South Haven summer Downtown Parking Loop will launch a week from Saturday. The free service will be provided courtesy of the Visitors Bureau and will run each Saturday and Sunday for eight weekends beginning on June 29th, 2019.
Scott Reinert is Executive Director of the Visitors Bureau. He says, “We are thrilled to partner with Van Buren Public Transit on this much needed service,” adding, “We know from past years that summer weekends provide a particularly difficult challenge for parking and traffic flow. Over the spring, we’ve been working with the Public Transit team, in addition to City resources, Downtown Development Authority officials and the Chamber of Commerce, to develop a simple plan to help alleviate parking and traffic congestion during the peak summer weekends.” Reinert says, “We hope that our visitors, as well as residents and downtown employees, will take advantage of this free service.”
The Downtown Parking Loop will run from 7:00 am until midnight each Saturday and 7:00 am until 5:00 pm each Sunday from June 29th through August 18th, 2019. Remote parking will be available at the north circle drive and parking lot of the South Haven High School off Elkenburg Street. The first pickup will be at the north circle drive of the high school and will run continuous loops each half hour with stops at the corner of Eagle Street and Kalamazoo Street, the Warren Senior Center parking lot on Williams Street and the parking lot behind City Hall on Quaker Street. Signs will be placed at each of the four stops, with informational brochures available at the stops, as well as at lodging properties and downtown businesses.
