Tragedy at a Cass County construction site this morning, Friday, May 31, 2019, led to the death of a Michigan City, Indiana man who was working on an electrical substation construction site in Howard Township near Niles.
Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke reports his office is investigating an accidental electrocution at around 11:35am this morniung in the 2700 block of White Street in Howard Township, northeast of Niles.
Emergency personnel were called to an American Electric Power Company substation that is under construction in that area. On arrival, authorities learned that 53 year old Steven E. Smith of Michigan City had been electrocuted while working on overhead power lines.
Sheriff Behnke reports that first aid was immediately administered to Smith, however he succumbed to his injuries from the incident.
Deputies were assisted on the scene by the Pokagan Tribal Police, SMCAS Ambulance Service and the Howard Township Fire Department.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
