Resurfacing Project on Portions of I-196 Begins Tomorrow, April 13th

If your commute or regular business transit routing takes you or your fleet along I-196 towards Holland, Zeeland, Grand Rapids and beyond, take note that you’ll likely run into some traffic slowdowns over the next two months due to the planned resurfacing of a stretch of that roadway in Ottawa and Allegan counties essentially between Holland and Zeeland.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says today that beginning tomorrow, Saturday, April 13th and running until approximately Monday, June 10th, 2019, they will be investing $10-million for the resurfacing job on the Gerald R. Ford Freeway, I-196, between M-40 and Byron Road.

That project also includes joint repairs and bridge approach replacements, according to the MDOT notice. The map accompanying this story on Moody on the Market details the stretch where travelers will find lane closures and traffic shifts throughout the duration of the project. MDOT says to help minimize delays over the summer, the final resurfacing work will take place this fall.

The work is designed to improve the ride quality and extend the serviceable life of the roadway there.

Travelers will also have some hiccups and road issues a little further along I-196 between Hudsonville and Grandville where ramp work near the juncture with M-6 will come into play with some of that work slated to continue to early August. Here’s more of what MDOT had to say about that later in the day:

Eastbound I-196 will close at M-6 starting 9 a.m. this Monday through August.  Eastbound I-196 traffic will exit to eastbound M-6 and can take northbound US-131 to eastbound I-196.  During this time, the ramp from westbound M-6 to eastbound I-196 will also be closed.
