Due to a change in contractor scheduling, the closure on Red Bud Trail will not occur until December 4th. The road is still expected to be closed for two weeks.

When flooding plagued the region earlier this year, a side slope along Red Bud Trail near Buchanan partially collapsed and now the Berrien County Road Department will need to effect repairs along that route, meaning patrons from the north headed to Wheatberry will need to take a detour and come in from the south, just as residents of Riverside Estates approaching from the south will need to detour and come in from the north.
It’s all part of the plan according to Berrien County Road Department Traffic Safety Supervisor Michael Juengling. A portion of Red Bud Trail will be closed for two weeks beginning next Monday, November 26th so that crews can construct a retaining wall alongside the road.
Juengling says that the retaining wall will go in just north of the Wheatberry Restaurant, meaning that traffic will be detoured onto Arctic Street over to N. Main Street and then on to Miller Road for the duration of the repair work.
Access to Wheatberry will be maintained from the Buchanan side — the south side of the restaurant. Access to Riverside Estates will be maintained from the north side, or residents are also invited to use Moccasin Trail if that provides easier access.
The Berrien County Road Department apologizes for any inconvenience during the repair process, but the retaining will is necessary to avoid further damage to the side slope along the colorful drive along the St. Joseph River.
