Water Pressure Issue Results in Boil Water Order

*****UPDATE*****

The boil water order has been rescinded, effective 4:35pm on Thursday, November 1st, 2018. There is no longer a need to boil water for safe consumption and use in cooking or drinking water.

*****UPDATE*****

Lots of scary things can happen on your average Halloween day, but things got real for Sodus Township and parts of Benton Charter Township today when officials were forced to issue a boil water notice to residents and businesses in the community.

Township Supervisor Kelly Smith says that a drop in water pressure in the Benton Township water distribution system has the potential to cause bacterial contamination in the system, and they issued a boil water warning until further notice. The issue may have caused problems for the Sodus Township Water System as well, so officials have extended the warning to all of Sodus Township. Those impacted in Benton Charter Township are those who are south of the Paw Paw River. It does not impact other parts of the system.

Residents are cautioned to avoid drinking the water without boiling it first until further notice. Pressure was quickly restored, but testing needs to be done to determine safety so the boil order is expected to remain in effect until tomorrow, November 1st at this juncture.

Details of the boil water notice were posted on the township’s website, but we have it here as well, in the form of a pdf file from township government linked below.
