Following Jarvis Death, Berrien County Seeks Next Register of Deeds

If you think you have what it takes to be the next Register of Deeds for Berrien County you have less than a month to get your application in to a special appointment committee searching for the replacement of the late Lori Jarvis.

The tragic traffic death of Jarvis last month has left a considerable void in her offices at the Berrien County Courthouse, and her grieving colleagues have begun the process of finding her successor. Whoever that is will serve out the remainder of Jarvis’ current term which ends on December 31, 2020.

The official Register of Deeds Appointment Committee has announced they are currently accepting applications for their consideration. That committee is comprised of the Presiding Probate Judge, Mabel J. Mayfield, County Clerk, Sharon Tyler, and Prosecuting Attorney, Michael Sepic. They are authorized by statute to fill the vacancy left by the untimely death of Jarvis, to fill out the balance of her term.

The Committee is requesting candidates send a county application, resume, and cover letter describing the applicant’s specific qualifications for the appointment.  The county application is available on the county’s official website at the link below:

The application, resume and cover letter should be addressed to Berrien County Clerk, Sharon Tyler, Courthouse, 811 Port Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085 and must be received no later than 4:00 pm on August 17, 2018.

Applicants have to be at least 18 years of age and must be registered to vote in Berrien County.

Desired experience could include managing a small staff, managing an office budget, and familiarity with real estate matters.

For 2018, the annual salary of the Register of Deeds position has been established by the Board of County Commissioners as $81,930. The position also offers health and retirement benefits.
