In the city of Dowagiac, they believe that great art can come from virtually anywhere. They also feel that great art should be available to everyone. So, they have undertaken a unique project this summer by inviting artists of all places and persuasions to submit original artwork for display throughout the community’s central business district, and it could be you.
Artists everywhere are being encouraged to answer Dowagiac’s “calling all artists” dispatch with ingenuity and openness. In fact, they will tell you that restraint and conventionality are, frankly, discouraged.
The call has been issued for the design of back-lit metal panels for downtown Dowagiac. Artworks of interest may be representational or abstract, functional or non-functional, stationary or kinetic. All art projects should reflect the Spirit of Dowagiac as well as a sense of place and arrival.
Needless to say, since the artwork will be displayed in an outdoor, public setting, the works submitted must be durable enough to withstand the elements and also must have been created new for this project or created within the last three to five years. Additionally, art to be considered must be safe to the public and if selected may also be available for sale locally.
The Spirit of Dowagiac entails the city, the people, and the culture, but also with a nod to the future. All works will be rendered in metal panels, back-lit and place strategically throughout the central business district to “add vibrancy and enhance a sense of place and arrival.”
The contest is open to all artists 18-years old and older, world-wide, both amateur & professional, working in all styles and schools of thought. You must apply first in order to be considered.
All entries are due no later than 5pm on Monday, July 31, 2017, and artists may submit individually or as a group. The city of Dowagiac will have a jury of board members review all works. Board members consist of local government workers, local business owners and residents.
