MDOT Will Put M-139 On a “Road Diet” North of Berrien Springs

Who knew that when they decided to reduce the number of lanes on a section of roadway in Michigan they actually use the same terminology as those among us working to lose weight? Believe it or not, the Michigan Department of Transportation refers to a planned project north of Berrien Springs as “a road diet.”

MDOT Engineers will meet with local business owners, residents and any other interested parties on Monday, June 26th to address the decision to reduce the number of lanes on M-139 at US-31 just north of the community of Berrien Springs in Oronoko Township late this year.

The public meeting is scheduled to take place from 4pm until 6pm on Monday, June 26th at the Oronoko Township Hall located at 4583 E. Snow Road in Berrien Springs.

MDOT’s plan is to reduce M-139 from five lanes down to just three between Lemon Creek Road and Red Bud Trail on the north side of Berrien Springs. While a final schedule has not been set, the project is planned for late 2017.

The proposed reconfiguration will reduce the number of driving lanes from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, and the existing left-turn lane will remain. MDOT contends that the reconfiguration will improve safety as vehicles merge onto M-139 from US-31 and Red Bud Trail, with reduced traffic speeds.

Comments and discussion about the planned changes are welcome, and accommodations can be made for persons with disabilities and limited English speaking ability as well. Large print materials, auxiliary aids or the services of interpreters, signers, or readers are available upon request. Please call 517-373-2227 to request at least seven days before the meeting date.
