$9.5M Resurfacing Project on I-94 Near New Buffalo Starts Monday

Major resurfacing of I-94 from the Michigan/Indiana state line north to M-239 gets underway starting Monday, in a project that will run to early June and result in double lane closures at times.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says resurfacing of more than 2-miles of I-94 starts on Monday, April 20th and is estimated to take until Friday, June 5th as the replace guardrails, repair and replace culverts, and perform reconstruction under bridges along the roadway. The $9.5-million investment is a carry-over project from the 2019 construction season according to MDOT, and is designed to extend the life of the road and increase surface friction, improving safety and providing motorists with a smoother ride.

During Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Stay-at-Home executive order, there will be daytime double-lane closures. After the executive order is lifted, there will be daytime single-lane closures and nighttime double-lane closures.

MDOT reminds everyone that this road construction project is an essential function, and also encourages transportation workers in the field to follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines to limit their risk of getting sick.
