Coming up this Friday, around 500 young people from all over Southwest Michigan will descend on the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan Fettig Youth Campus in Benton Harbor for the club’s fourth annual Unity Day.

Boys and Girls Club spokesperson Sherri Ulleg tells us the kids will be taking part in a field day.

“We have eSports, we have outdoor competitions, we have water slides, we have a no-bake contest,” Ulleg said. “So the events are really diverse to really try and engage our kids and keep them interested regardless of what their interest is.”

Ulleg says the day is a great opportunity for young people to meet others just like them from communities they might never visit themselves. Some of the young people stay in touch following the big day.

“There’s definitely a lot of energy. We’re fortunate to have wonderful staff at each of our locations that will be accompanying the kids and helping guide them through the day.”

Unity Day will kick off with an opening ceremony at 1:30. The games begin at 2. Ulleg says they’ll have lunch and then award medals to the game winners at 3:30 as the youth head back home.

The day will include Boys and Girls Club youth from Benton Harbor, Benton Heights, Bridgman, Buchanan, Lawrence, Niles, South Haven, St. Joseph, Sturgis, Three Oaks, and White Pigeon.

Unity Day is not open to the general public.
