Michigan Gas Utilities is looking for a new “ambassadog,” or K9 representative to promote safe digging, and everyone now has a chance to vote for their favorite of five candidates.

Michigan Gas spokesperson Matt Cullen tells us the company put out word to customers it’s looking for a dog ambassador and received submissions.

“We’ve started our Doggone It Safe Digging Contest, which allows our customers to have fun showing off their adorable dogs while also sharing that very important message that helps keep everyone safe,” Cullen said.

Voting is now underway and will continue through April 23.

“People can vote as many times as they want for their favorite dog. We have five to choose from, including one from Benton Harbor, who is a seven month old Australian shepherd named Zeppelin. We also have other dogs from other communities throughout southern and western Michigan.”

There’s also a candidate from Coloma, a 9-year-old border collie named Snowman.

Cullen says the winning dog will be featured in social media posts reminding everyone to call 811 at least two days in advance of doing any digging.
