The United Way of Southwest Michigan has announced the winners of its Volunteer United Youth Scholarship Awards.

One scholarship goes to a youth from each of the United Way’s service counties — Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren — who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism in their community.

The winner for Berrien County is Sawyer Lundberg of Niles High School. The United Way says he’s volunteered at the hospital in Niles, helping patients and staff with whatever is needed and using his art to encourage the hospital team.

The Van Buren County winner is Tiyanna Covington of Hartford High School. She started a tutoring program at Hartford Middle School called “Helping Hand” and was later recognized at the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America state competition for her efforts.

Cass County’s winner is Addyson Wrigley of Edwardsburg High School. Her favorite volunteer event thus far has been “Operation Christmas” during which the National Honor Society’s members provided a great Christmas for a local family.

The United Way of Southwest Michigan says the winners were selected by a panel of their peers.
