New Buffalo Area Schools is planning to support a housing development in New Buffalo Township as a way of increasing attainable housing in the area.

The district is seeking Statements of Qualifications from developers to build single family homes and townhouses on about 42 acres of property owned by the district on Lubke Road near New Buffalo Elementary School. The district says roughly ten to 12 acres will be used for the development to eventually feature 60 to 80 residential units.

In addition to seeking developers, the district is planning to use the housing development as a training opportunity for its building and trades program, giving the students experience by having them construct one home per year for 15 years.

The $30 million development planned by the district is intended to address the shortage of affordable housing in the New Buffalo area, where property values are sky high and developers only cater to higher incomes.
